Rhys Davies Running desk Final Editor
I volunteered to be producer of my Team, as I wanted greater control of the content and structure of the show. In particular I wanted to push the idea of being as experimental as possible by pushing New technology, hopefully differentiating our team from the rest with our ingenuity and forward thinking, because how many other people can say they can record, edit and broadcast a radio show from the phone in their pocket. On this webpage, you will find a vareity of material I have submitted for assesment, ranging from drama pieces to Journalism reports. Seeing that most of these features were not recorded in a studio enviroment, the technical quality and clarity of the voices are the best I could hope for. With many of the features created with our target audience in mind(students aged 16-25 residing in the Cardiff area) and contributors for the interviews also take into account.
As producer, I sectioned the many responsibilities of the show between the team so they could be developed independently. Claire & Leon would have major control of writing the script, Rhys would check the levels and quality of the prerecorded audio before the show and its compatability with Myriad and Morgan would focus on plotting the timings of the script and during the live show. My main focus during production was the running order & Clock format. Embracing New Technology, I avoided using basic paper Clock diagrams in favour of digital spreadsheets, that automatically adapt to any content changes. As you can see, the visual appearance of the running order is far more pleasing and easier to read than a typical paper running order. The entire file is colour coded into sections, and as the files cells are all scripted together, anything can be changed and it will instantly be applied and updated to the rest of the running order. For easy reading, live pieces are shown in a BOLD font, the fixed reviews & reports that are provided by members of other groups are marked in a RED font and Music is displayed in BLUE, this makes it easy to see which parts of the show contain specific content.
All of the Information in the running order is filtered straight into a pie chart that works as a clock cue. The clock cue created reacts to any updates to the running order and is 100% accurate, with every degree of angle in the circle representing 10 seconds of audio. The clock is also colour coded, YELLOW being Music, Our features being BLUE, Reports and reviews in GREEN and Live studio Being in RED
I took the idea of a clock format a little further, and by adding a few lines of additional script, I can also get the spreadsheet to calculate every section of the show into a percentage and collect it in a pie chart. This pie chart displays how much of the show is filled with each kind of feature, split into Live Material, Music and Pre-recorded Features.
These files & charts demonstrates a highly technical approach in the way I have produced the running order and clock que. While a single traditional paper running order may have been quicker to produce than this spreadsheet version, once I had made the first template, all that was needed to produce a fresh running order for the following shows is to fill the file with new data, which will automatically update, in turn saving a lot of time and effort in the long run.
This Dramatic Reading demonstrates a creative approach in the way I have integrated sound effects and music into the work, as well as my ability to over come my own vocal short comings by getting a drama student to read on my behalf with a variety of accents. The technical quality of the piece is dispalyed as it contains a variety of live-recorded & sourced sound effects that I time specifically to punctuate the speakers story, along with a sound bed that changes with the mood of the reading.
For this reading, I searched for a foreign fable that I could translate to English and record for my piece. I specifically looked for a foreign fable as there are many to choose from, many have lasted the test of time, so are interesting and also copyright free, and unless people grew up speaking that language, it would be highly unlikely for people to have heard the story before.
I chose the Japanese Fable 'the Snail and the Caterpillar', for my dramatic reading, as it is very short and simple, the story mentions many sound effects such as babbling brooks and buzzing bees which would be easy to implement in an audio reading, and I have a rough understanding of Japanese, so not too hard to translate.
When I translated the script, it mentioned a few things that had no direct sound effect, so I rewrote parts of the script so it was easier to find sound effects. I sourced the music and many of the sound effects online, and recorded any other necessary sound effects myself. As I do not confidence in my voice for a dramatic reading, I enlisted my friend Sarah Matsson, a Drama student, to contribute to the piece by reading on my behalf, varying her accent between the characters of the Snail, the caterpillar and the Narrator.
Snail & the Caterpillar
One day, the caterpillar asked the snail, 'Mr. Snail, you know many things. Could you tell me, What kind of shape, the shape of life is?'
The snail nodded, and answered: 'Well, Mr. Caterpillar, maybe life is red, like the chest, of a robin.'
The caterpillar laughed happily and said, 'No, Mr. Snail! I didn't ask about the color of life! I asked you about the shape!'
The snail nodded and pondered. And then he answered, 'Well, Mr. Caterpillar, I think that maybe life has a sweet scent, like a pot of honey.'
The caterpillar let out a disappointed sigh and said, 'No, Mr. Snail! I didn't ask about the scent of life! I asked you about the shape!'
The snail nodded, and pondered, and thought some more, and then he answered, 'Well, Mr. Caterpillar, I think that maybe life murmurs, like a babbling brook.'
The caterpillar finally broke down into sorrowful tears , shook his head , and said, 'No, Mr. Snail! I didn't ask about the sound of life! I asked about the shape!'
The snail nodded, and pondered , and at long last he finally answered, 'Well, Mr. Caterpillar, I think that maybe, life has a sharp, sweet flavor, like a juicy berry.'
Losing his patience, the caterpillar grew very angry , and said, 'If you don't want to answer me, fine! I'm not going to ask you any more, Mr. Snail! Good-bye!' And with that, the caterpillar turned around and went home.
When he was gone, the snail nodded and said, 'Oh, Mr. Caterpillar. You already knew the answer. Happiness, disappointment, sorrow, anger. These are the sights, smells, sounds, and tastes of life, as life can take on many different shapes.'
The End
This review demonstrates a strong understanding of our shows target audience and how I can pose as a contributor to a live show.
On the morning of our final show, we were missing both the review and the report from other teams. With 5 minutes of the show to fill, and time of the essence, I devised a backup plan for a live review that morning. The review would be of Being Human, which started its 5th season the night before on BBC3. This TV show fits with the 'Watch' concept of the Monday reviews and has the same target audience as our TEAM show (aged 16-25 in the Cardiff area), Being Human is also set in South Wales, with many parts of the show filmed locally in Cardiff, so the review hit all the marks for our target audience.
We did eventually receive the missing review and report, but as another feature was dropped at the start of the show, the Being Human Review was slotted back in. It was performed live with me acting as contributor, with presenters Claire and Leon asking me questions about the show. Due to technical issues in the studio, I had to share a microphone with presenter Claire, while not Ideal the technical quality of the recording was better than expected, with a level sound bed underneath.
Claire: Sunday night marked the return of BBC's take on the vampire werewolf format. Being Human, which returns for its 5th season, so we dragged hard core fan david on to a mic to let us know what all the fuss is about.
Leon: So David, for those of us out of the loop, whats is being Human?
David: Well Being Human is a comedy drama, about a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost, who all share a house together as they attempt to live a normal life. show was created by Toby Whithouse, who was best known for his channel 4 comedy no angels, and as making some very memorable episodes of Doctor who, such as the God delusion, which was my favourite episode of last season. so the show is a heavy mix of scifi and comedy, but with very dark undertones.
Leon: so whats it about?
David: well the show is set over in Barry island in a world much like our own, but there are many conspiracies keeping vampires and werewolves a secret to the public, it follows 3 very unusual house mates. a century old vampire named Hal, who was once a king amonst vampires but is trying to put all the bad hes done behind him and quit his blood addiction. a Werewolf named Tom, who knows everything about killing vampires but not a thing about how to act in society , and welsh Girl alex who is a ghost, after being brutally murdered in the last seaon. In short the show is like a very dark version of the odd coule.
Claire: still sounds like a better house than most student digs, vampires and werewolves are nothing comapred to lazy students.
Leon: and now we are up to season 5? So whats new for the show?
David: well season 5 marks the first season with none of the original cast, over the years the major characters have all left the show, including Herrick, played by Adrian Lester, who I say is without a doubt one of the best and most likeable Villians in all of TV. But tahst not to say the show isnt still great, the new cast are instantly likeable. Hal is suarve and charming like a young stephen fry, exactly how you would expect a 600 year old vampire to be, none of this sparkly emo stuff from this show. Tom is a super sweet and innocent like a puppy dog, until vampires show up when he turns into a killing machine, again its what you would want from a werewolf, and alex, a spunky young womon who is as cute as she is tough. but what has seem to go down hill over the years is the major plot..
This report demonstrates a creative approach to a very serious topic. The target audience is also catered for as many of the student listeners are about to leave university and finding it very hard to get graduate jobs, with latest statistics showing 73 graduates applying for each vacancy; my report was on whether University was worth while or if seeking a job from the start would be more fruitful.
David:Buyers Guilt, Im sure we've all been there, when we splash out a huge amount of money on something, and a few days later, we ask ourself, what were we thinking. well that feeling gets a lot worse, when the thing you bought not only cost you tens of thousands of pounds that will put you in debt for decades to come, its also something you wasted 3 years of your life on. I'm sure I'm not the only person feeling a huge amount of regret for going to university.
DAVID: With University now costing over 9 grand a year, if you factor in a 3 year course, plus housing and expenses, the typical student will now leave university with 50 thousand pounds worth of debt, and no gurantee of a job. And no wonder, With unemployment at an all time high plus the UK staring down the barrel of a Triple dip recession. The qualifications we spent so much time and money on trying to get, might as well be made out of toilet paper.
DAVID: Just ask Master students Cherith Morrison, who despite holding a bachelors degree and studying a masters, cant even find a low level job to eran some much needed cash.
Cherith: I currently dont work..nobody will hire
DAVID: and even if you ditched the idea of uni to find work, its not like you will fair any better, just like Katie marsden, whos plan to get into work, didnt go so smootly.
KATIE: I orginally planned to take a gap year..lack of demand.
DAVID: But its not all doom and gloom, sure university will now cost you over 50 K over the full years of the course, But you dont have to pay a penny back until you start working and making a descent wage, and with the Job market looking so desperate at the moment, maybe University is the safest place..
So like the above example, my report aimed to be over the top depressing and bitter, which would come across as humorous. While I wanted to imitate the doug stanhope report closely, I had to limit how dark and depressing my own report was, as It had to fit with a pre-watershed 4pm show and a less cynical target audience of 16-25 year olds.
My proudest part of this feature is my choice of contributors. I selected 2 people with opposite experiences of both University and work. I spoke with Cherith Morrison, a master's degree who had to work part time during University just to keep a float and Katie Marsden, who turned down her university place in order to get a decent job, but currently studies part time at home for a degree.
This piece is also a technical feat, as Cherith was in Bristol at time of the recording and Katie was 250 miles away, in Lancashire. I was able to record both interviewees over Skype, with the audio automatically stripped and saved as a wav file for easy editing, again showing how I embrace technology, and while the audio recordings of both contributors had alot of background distortion, I belive the choice of these strong contributors outweighs the minor audio quality.
Candy Crush Saga was the most played game on Facebook in 2012, and with our target audience being heavy social media users, and the game arriving on android and iPhone devices as a dedicated app, this was an obvious choice for the Friday play Review.
Video games are exploding in popularity now, a few years ago, you'd have to shell out a few hundred quid for a high end games console plus £40 a pop for each game. it was a niche market, but now with many mobile games available for under the cost of a sandwich or even for free, everyone is a casual gamer, I dom't know a soul who hasnt wasted a few hours with Farmville on facebook or has Angry Birds on their phone. and now the largest facebook game of 2012 has finally made itself to our smart phones. Candy Crush Saga
0.25 Music up (Lady Gaga - Love Game)
0.30 Location link - Now you won't find people lining up on mass or swarming to the shops to buy this game, as you would with a new apple product or a blockbuster film, its the sort of game people would sneak away to play while at work and now, that its free for Android and iPhone, you may soon see an awful lot of people in a cafe/bus stop like this one, playing the game. so I took the game around to see what people though.
0.50 Voxpops (offer the tab with game on, let people play, let them say what they think of it if they ahvent played it before )
1.20 Location link - Well overall people i talked to here seem to like it, and why wouldnt they, over 5 MILLION people havd donaloaded the game on android alone in a under a month.and with a 5 star score, people seem to love it.
1.30 Music (fade and hold under)
1.35 In short Candy Crush Saga is just Bejeweled with sweets, but if you liked bejeweled when it first came out so many years ago, then you will still like this, with the added bonus of posting your score online so you can show of to your mates. see for yourself. You can play Candy Crush Saga for free online at facebook and king.com or you can download the game for your iPhone, iPad or Android device.
1.45 Music up
1.50 Music fade out [END]
My first feature for our shows was a Tech Investigation into how unsecure mobile phone GPS can be. This feature was recorded entirely on location while 'out and about' with a mobile device rather than in a studio, so while technical quality wasn;'t perfect, the voices were very clear despite outside influences. This demonstrates how well I can perform live on location in an unusual environment, overcoming distractions and outside sources.
Nowadays we are all fairly security conscious, especially when it comes to our tech, we hide our pin numbers and passwords, we never give our phone numbers out to people and anti virus software is a must have for our computers. well we like to think we are secure and safe, but there is one things that knows everything about us, it knows our friends family and how to contact them, it has acces to all our emails and social networks, it can see all our messages, it even knows where we are at every time of the day. its something we all carry around with us every day and trust indefenately. its our smart phones.
you may not be aware, but mobile phone networks keep tabs on an awful lot of data about us, from what we search, to who we message to where we are. this is usually sold on to other companies as anonymous statistics to help with things like targeted adevrtising. all safe for now, But some people can take advantage of this data, imagine the sort of harm a person can do, if they know exactly where someone is goiung to be at anytime and what they are up to.
[In Bute Park]
Now im going to do a test with leon (hello) so Leon, here is the challenge, you will have a 10 minute head start to go hide somewhere in cardiff city center, your not gonna tell me where you are going, you cant go outside of cardiff and you have to stay above ground level, you got that? once you have your hiding place, your gonna message me to let me know your ready. and i wilkl track you down using my awesome Sherlock style detective skill. Genius maxfire g-08xu driver for mac download. Okay leon, off you go.
now what I haven't told leon is I will actually be using his phones GPS to track him down. hence the rule about staying above ground. now leon isnt too security conscious so i know his GPS will be on.
[track leon through cardiff]
now there are many ways to stay safe, disable your GPS on your phoneis a must, this will save alot of battery power and keep your location secret until you need to use it. also dont post your number or contacts onto social media sites, finally be careful who you give your number to,
This piece was sparsely scripted, as most of the bulk of the feature came from me tracking down the willing contributor, and his thoughts on GPS security. This was also a show of my ability to think on the spot, as I had no clue where the contributor would choose to hide, so I would have to script on location my thoughts and deal with varying background disturbances such as passing cars and shop music, which required a lot of editing to make my voice as clear as possible, and with the constant song playing during the final interview, I had to be selective of my cuts to ensue the background song didn't jump too drastically.
For the pilot show, I produced an Investigation into Cinema prices in Cardiff, and offered tips on how to save money. This went through many variations, starting as a straight factual investigation, developing into a live studio discussion before finally becoming a report with contributors Vox pops, asking them the last time they visited the cinema, and their opinions on the high prices.
With 3 local cinemas, within walking distance of the Attrium, and cinema going being a major cheap passtime for students, a cienma report offering tips on how to save money at the cinema seems perfect for our target audience.
I'm happy with how the development of this feature progressed, as it taught me that I could modify ideas into new formats and slot them into other peoples shows, and while no variation of this made it to the final shows, many of my features were modified to be included in other shows.
Now we all love a the cinema, and whats not to love, you get to watch your favourite films on a giant screen, with stunning sound, comfy seats and tasty snacks
vox pops: last time i went cinema + how tmuch the paid
Well Cinema chains say that they actually make little money off the ticket price, and with competition from online, DVD's and piracy have pushed up ticket prices. But even with these challenger, cinema chains are actually doing better than youd think, with profits up year after year due to the poplarity , actually hitting over £1 billion last year for the first time ever. This is mainly to do with the popularity of 3d films and the higher cost charged.
vox pops: how they feel about these high charges and if it is justifiable
So is there anything we poor student can do to save some cash? well first is the day, if you go mid week before 5pm, offpeak as its known you can save between 15 and 20% on your ticket. you can also save a further quid on each ticket by flashing your student ID. finally, If your on the EE mobile phone network, you can get 2 for 1 cinema tickets on wednesday. all you have to do is text CINEMA to 6 triple zero 5 or download the EE cinema app. Best of all, all these offers stack, so if you get them all, you can make some Huge savings. which means more money for the over priced snacks
During week 2, with Claire and Leon being pre-occupied with other projects, I had a very heavy influence on the script, virtually rewriting and doubling the content of that week's script. While some of this didn't make it into the final show, I knew that I wanted a larger influence in the script for the following week, so for week 3, I wrote a few sections of the script to be included in the show, including the intro, outro and this piece.
LEON: that was quite sweet, but to be honset, knowing our producer david, I was expecting 'Soft Kitty' for his dramatic reading
CLAIRE: Yes Leon, but you should know, soft kitty is only for when your sick
Leon:well its our last show, and i'm a lil sad, sadness is a type of sickness. sing soft kitty to me Claire
CLAIRE: but i dont know soft kitty
LEON: I'll teach you 'soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur'
CLAIRE: soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur
LEON: Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, Pur Pur Pur
CLAIRE: Happy kitty...
LEON: No, you have to do it from the begining
CLAIRE: soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur; Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, Pur Pur Pur.. Happy now?
LEON: I certainly am, I feel so much better, and hopefully our listeners are too, they get 3 dramatic readings for the price of 1, you lucky bunch
The piece was read by claire and leon, who contributed their own knowledge and charm to it. The thing I love about this piece is that the live reaction is 100% authentic, with Leon struggling to hold back his laughter, and even jumbling up the lines, but both presenters were able to save it by singing the song in key at the end. This emotion makes the piece feel real, that the presenters have an active interest in the subject, just like our target audience, and are not just speaking from a script.
To advertise what is coming up in our following weeks show, I volunteered to script and edit our trails for the Friday show. Creatively, the piece takes direct inspiration from our show as it is a conversational chat between the presenters. I used'shut up and let me go' by the ting tings as the soundbed as we used the piece for all our live reviews, and is a recognisable constant with our presenters voices. The trail explains what to expect in the upcoming show, meaning we had a new trail for each show, rather than repeat the same trail each week.
When I produced the first Trail, It was late night and presenter Leon was 100's of miles away in Somerset. To counter this, Leon and Claire contributed their voice recordings on their own mobile devices, and messaged me the audio to which I edited together, added the sound bed and ended it with Leon's ident.
The technical qality of this piece is very clear, and the music bed filters into Leon's Ident very well. The turnaround for this was als very quick, so we recorded subsequent Trails in the same method, being able to write, record and edit a finished trail in under an hour.
CLAIRE: We have lots in store for you on Monday's TEAM show. I will be keeping you up to date with the latest bizzare, weird and wonderful news stories from the past week.
LEON: In the tech feature I will be pitting HD screens vs standard, to see if the public really can tell the differance.
CLAIRE: Morgan will be meeting an up and coming musician in our weekly interview.
LEON: Morgan will also return with the stunning climax of his dramatic reading of the family, and as its our last show ever, we will have a few extra bonus features for you.
CLAIRE: and of course we will have some of the best and latest News, reviews and music, of all things Cardiff. thats all coming up on TEAM monday
LEON: Not to mention Technology, entertainment, arts and music.
As it was our last year at University, and likely the last time for us to be experimental before heading into the world of work. I encouraged my team to record on smart phones instead of using the Universities' audio recorders, which I find clunky, very outdated and time consuming. With the media industry as a whole slowly moving towards more modern methods of recording, I feel being able to say you can record and edit and entire radio show on a mobile phone to be a great way to stand above the masses.
with High definition Microphones, the ability to email and transfer files immediately to the cloud and even on board audio editing tools, a high end Mobile phone will easily out match any audio recording equipment in terms of quality and usability. Even with my cheap £60 android phone, I was able to produce many of the features showcased here. So I feel it necessary in this section to give a shout out to the lovely applications I used for the project.
Audacity
A light weight audio editor, available for Windows and Mac computers. While not the prettiest, This application is insanely powerful, with countless features, effects and controls that makes it more than a match for adobe audition, but still stunningly light, easy to run on even a low powered netbook, giving major portability. Best of all it is 100% free. You will have to download the LAME depositories to export as MP3 files, but this is a true gem.
Tape-a-talk Recorder
An android Audio recorder, while initially made to record basic audio notes, this app is pretty basic on features but it is the highest rated audio recorded on android, being able to record straight to WAV, but with FLAC compression available, this recorder makes very small wav files that can be emailed, messaged or uploaded to the cloud in seconds. I used this app to record a majority of my audio, including for the pilot. A free version is available with ad support.
RecForge
All Hail RecForge! in the same way the iPod marked the death of the CD player, I feel Recforge will mark the death of audio mics. With all the features of Tap-a-talk, RecForge improves to a professional level, with Gain control and option to record straight to WAV, MP3 and other audio formats. The real swan song of this app is it's on board editing tools. You can access the wavelength of any recording, being able to top and tail it in the app, as well as adjust the audio levels, before you can email it wirelessly to anything. A huge time saver, just a shame I discovered it late into the project. Again a free ad supported version is available.
Dropbox
Dropbox is a Cloud storage solution for every operating system under the sun. Anyfile saved into the Dropbox folder will automatically be available online and across any of your devices, so it is just a simple case of installing Dropbox on your phone, recording any audio you need and that audio will automatically be available on your computer for instant editing. Fast, efficient and you will always have a backup of your audio. 2gb is available for free, but it is not hard to earn up to 20gb.
